TREATING ABUSED ADOLESCENTS
Eliana Gil
Guilford Publications, 1996

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Readers of this book will learn a framework and techniques to enable them to more effectively communicate and work with adolescents who have suffered from abuse.

Adolescents who have been abused, either recently or when they were children, have special therapeutic needs that have been neglected in the literature. Members of this population often provoke fear, resentment, anger, and general mistrust among adults, including professionals, which can interfere with clinical interaction. This book describes the impact of abuse on development, shows how 'acting out' can be understood as a bid for attention and help, and tells specific ways a therapist can overcome obstacles in treatment. Many case studies and sample dialogues are included.

Eliana Gil, Ph.D., has a private practice in Rockville, Maryland; is Director of the Center for Advanced Clinical Development; former President of the California Professional Society on the Abuse of Children; and author of THE HEALING POWER OF PLAY: WORKING WITH ABUSED CHILDREN and PLAY IN FAMILY THERAPY.
