After reading this book, the reader will be familiar with the scientific fundamentals of sleep, its pathology, its effects on health, and the principles of treatment of sleep problems.
This book is an introduction to the science of sleep, and its assessment and treatment, useful for the professional unfamiliar with the area or for the layperson. Part One deals with the fundamentals of sleep, sleep research and the basic findings of research on circadian rhythms. Part Two describes sleep pathology: insomnia; sleep apnea, narcolepsy, sleepwalking and night terrors; sleep deprivation; and other sleep disorders. Part Three describes the health effects of sleep; relation to the immune system, mood and vitality; dream physiology, reality, interpretation, and meaning vs. mechanism; and the relation to creativity, productivity, and learning. Part Four describes the assessment and treatment of sleep problems.
William C. Dement, M.D., Ph.D. founded the world's first sleep disorders center at Stanford University. In 1975 he launched the American Sleep Disorders Association and served as its president for its first twelve years. He has taught the popular course 'Sleep and Dreams' at Stanford University and wrote the first undergraduate text on sleep. He was chairman of the National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research, whose final report led to the establishment of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research within the National Institutes of Health.
Christopher Vaughan is the author of How Life Begins: The Science of Life in the Womb, named as one of the best books of 1996 by the National Association of Libraries.
