PRIMAL LEADERSHIP
Realizing the Power of Emotional Intelligence
Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis, & Annie McKee
Harvard Business School Press, 2002
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Readers will be able to work with leaders to assess, develop, and sustain emotional intelligence competencies over time; inspire and motivate people; cultivate resonant leadership throughout teams and organizations; and leverage resonance to increase bottom-line performance.
The 'open loop' design of the limbic system means that input from other people affects emotions powerfully. If a leader resonates energy and enthusiasm, his or her organization thrives. If a leader spreads negativity and dissonance, it flounders. This concept charges leaders with driving emotions in the right direction to have a positive effect on earnings or strategy. Resonant leaders connect with others using emotional intelligence competencies like empathy and self-awareness. They employ up to six leadership styles, from visionary to coaching to pacesetting, interchanging them as the situation demands.
Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., is the author of Emotional Intelligence and the codirector of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations at Rutgers University. Richard Boyatzis, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Organizational Behavior at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. Annie McKee, Ph.D., serves on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Education and consults to business and education leaders worldwide.
