THE PARADOX OF SLEEP
The Story of Dreaming

Michel Jouvet, translated by Laurence Garey
A Bradford Book, The MIT Press, 1999

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After reading this book, the reader will be familiar with the history of research on sleep and dreaming, and with current theories on why we dream.

Michel Jouvet was one of the first neurobiologists to begin sleep and dream research in the 1950s. He is credited with the discovery of paradoxical sleep - a 'third' state of the brain as different from normal sleep as sleep is from waking. Jouvet describes the technical and ideological obstacles pioneering sleep researchers faced, and explains the anatomical, biochemical, and genetic techniques involved. He discusses psychological, philosophical, and metaphysical aspects of sleep and dreaming.

Michel Jouvet is Emeritus Professor of Experimental Medicine at the University of Lyon, France. He is the author of LE CHATEAU DES SONGES (a novel) and LE GRENIER DES R-VES (nonfiction).
