LEARNING OBJECTIVES - This course was designed to allow the reader to:
• Understand how ethics are general guidelines set forth by professional organizations, while morality is more narrow and based on cultural and religious beliefs
• Learn how to train the ethical decision-making using a hermeneutic approach contextualized to the cultures being worked with
• Learn a model that offers a foundation in Western, Eastern, Middle Eastern, and Southern Hemisphere philosophical ethical theories
• Consider the context of the situation, including the client’s worldview and various professional codes
• Learn how different philosophical ethical theories fit within the codes
• Understand the steps included in most ethical decision-making models
• Understand how the natural law theory differs from the utilitarian theory
• Learn about Hinduism, Judaism, Taoism, Catholicism and their values
• Learn that there are no universal ethical codes although there may be core ethics that transcend culture including truth, seeking justice, and respect for others
Rick Houser, Ph.D, is Professor and Chair of in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Dr. Houser has authored and co-authored several books addressing issues such as research and counseling and the role of group affiliation and power. Additionally, much of his scholarship focus includes the intersection of social identity; social comparison and social dominance theories.
Felicia L. Wilczenski, Ed.D., received a doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is an Associate Professor and Director of the School Counseling Program in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology in the Graduate College of Education at the University of Massachusetts Boston. She is author of numerous articles addressing social and emotional interventions in K-12 settings.
MaryAnna Ham, Ed.D., is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Boston. She developed the ethics curriculum at the University of Massachusetts Boston and she has taught ethics to graduate-level counseling students for over ten years. Dr. Ham was the former Director and founder of the Family Therapy Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
